Marta Lonzi and the Feminist Critique of Architecture
Throughout her life, Marta Lonzi (1938–2008) was committed to asserting a different point of view in contrast to official architectural culture through projects, competitions, debates, and publications. Her critical reflection on the creative process, which stems from a subjective feminist reading and then broadens into more general considerations on design culture, underpins all her work as a designer, spanning from the urban scale to the object scale.
Since 2017, her archive has been held at the Fondazione Elvira Badaracco in Milan.
This seminar is dedicated to Marta Lonzi as part of the monographic course held at the Politecnico di Milano by Marco Biraghi and Federica Deo on the relationship between architecture and counter-powers.
The seminar will address significant moments of Italian and international feminism in the field of design. In particular, Claudia Mattogno will trace an international path starting from the early practices of feminist occupation and the transformation of existing spaces, concluding with perspectives on feminist design approaches, with reference to Italian research experiences.
Raffaella Poletti will focus on the figure of Marta Lonzi as a designer and her unique interpretation of this theme.
