Subject: the documentary is promoted by the Association for an Archive of Movements and directed by filmmaker Gianfranco Pangrazio. It is the second chapter, following the one dedicated to the struggles of workers and students, of a series entitled Genoa, Autobiography of ’68.
Italian feminism in the 1970s was a major political movement that developed a complex and radical critique which, starting from women’s condition, addressed all of society and politics. The film offers a journey through Genoese feminism: some of the protagonists recount, through individual and group testimonies, ideas, discoveries, conflicts, achievements, discontinuities, and connections with the past and present.
Through the voices and faces of the women interviewed, some of the key themes and moments emerge. The birth of the first consciousness-raising group, the eruption of feminist thought in the formations of the extra-parliamentary Left and in the trade union, where some women from the FML began to promote a gender approach to labor issues. The documentary also casts a quick glance at the present, with the voices of other women from younger generations.
Actress Mimma Pieri transforms into narrative voice the reflections of young scholar Anna Frisone, whose historical research forms the framework of the screenplay, reworked in the collective editorial work with director Gianfranco Pangrazio, Francesca Dagnino, and Paola De Ferrari in a dialogue between genders and generations.
The narrative is supported by images and documents from the period, many of which are preserved in the Archive of Movements. Documentary production is in fact an integral part of the activity of the Association for an Archive of Movements, which since its founding in 2009 has been collecting and organizing documents, photos, books, and oral sources in an archive that is housed and accessible at the Berio Library in Genoa.
