The essays collected in this volume present new perspectives and various interpretations of the leading role played by Italian women intellectuals in the construction of a new democratic and pacifist culture. This investigation explores the active commitment of thirteen authors (Aleramo, Banti, Bellonci, Cialente, de Céspedes, Ginzburg, Manzini, Masino, Morante, Ortese, Romano, Viganò, Zangrandi) from the phase in which the planning of the Republic originated (1943) to its first ten years of life (1956). These protagonists are daughters of the restless and contradictory silences of history and mothers of the new literature of the Resistance and the Republic. They experienced the gestation of the Resistance as a period of waiting; the birth of the Constitution as a civic gesture; and universal suffrage—which broke the chain of painful political silence—with a unique and subtle form of emotional and historical freedom; and the growth of the new Republic through an intense political gaze on literature.
