Subject: “In all this time, no one has ever spoken to you about me. About who I was, how I lived, how I left.” With these words, Alina Marazzi imagines her mother Liseli—who tragically passed away when Alina was only seven years old—beginning to tell her about her life. A story of poignant intensity, which the director sought and rediscovered where it had remained hidden: in the films packed away in the attic of her grandfather, the publisher Ulrico Hoepli, who for decades had captured family memories with an amateur camera. Gradually, the idea was born to edit those fragments of memory, along with documents, letters, and diary pages, to give a voice back to that barely known yet unforgettable woman, while simultaneously retracing the history of a family and a century; the result is this film. In the book, the director recounts its origins, the troubled production process, and everything that followed: the critical and public success, the community that formed around the website, and the audience’s reactions.
