Subject: Rieucros is a small town in southern France, in the Lozère region. Under the decree of November 12, 1938 concerning foreigners, it became the site of the first internment camp in France. In the winter of 1939-40, women of 25 nationalities were interned there, all considered “Suspectes”—that is, “responsible for the economic, social, and political crisis France was experiencing.” Baldina Di Vittorio and Giulietta Fibbi turned 20 in the Rieucros camp. They arrived at the camp because they were deemed “Suspects”; both came from families of Italian anti-fascist exiles and were suspected of personally collaborating with communist groups. At the camp, they shared daily life with other women, enduring cold, hunger, and the determination to remain lucid and alive by studying and engaging with one another.
