Subject: This documentary, conceived and directed by Nella Condorelli, with historical and political contributions from Marisa Rodano, Paola Gaiotti De Biase, Gioia Di Cristofaro Longo, and Edda Billi, and in collaboration with RAI News 24 and RAI Teche, offers a reconstruction—never before attempted—of the history and political activity of the 20th-century women’s movement, set against the backdrop of the political events that marked the century. The collective protagonists are the associations, groups, and struggles for the achievement of full female citizenship, from the Socialist Leagues to the Unione Femminile, Christian feminists, the Women’s Defense Groups in the Resistance struggle, and the political associations born with the Republic—including the Unione Donne Italiane, Centro Italiano Femminile, and Ande—to the paths of female subjectivity in the 1950s and 1960s, the neo-feminism of the 1970s with its countless collectives and groups, and the transformations of the last twenty years.
Divided into two parts, from 1900 to the birth of the Republic and from 1948 to the end of the century, the documentary relies exclusively on archival materials, films, photos, posters, and various documents. “Journey through Women’s 20th Century. A Political History” also utilizes archival footage from the Audiovisual Archive of the Labor Movement, the national archives of the UDI, CIF, ACLI, CGIL, the monthly magazine Noi Donne, and photos, amateur videos, posters, flyers, and documents generously provided by associations and personal or family photographic archives.
